He didn't direct JP ///, because Spielberg is a friend of Joe Johnston's, Johnston worked as the art director on many of Spielberg's films from the '80s'. In the early 90's Johnston became a director.( I think his first film was the Rocketeer) Shortly after Jurassic Park had been released Johnston had a talk with Spielberg and asked Spielberg if he could direct the sequel to Jurassic Park. Spielberg told Johnston that he planned on directing the sequel himself, but if there was ever a 3rd. Jurassic Park, Spielberg said that he would offer Johnston the directing job as the first choice. 8 years later, Spielberg kept his word and went to Johnston, first, and ofcourse Johnston jumped on the opportunity to direct a Jurassic Park film. If you don't take my word for it, watch the making-of featurette on the JP /// DVD.
